BIG STORY

38 BAHRAIN Zero Energy Tower
There is a broad scientific consensus that evaluates the current situation as ‘alarming’. Global warming has reached shocking levels and is fast approaching the point of no return. Soaring record-breaking temperatures are increasingly being recorded while the UN report forecasts an additional 6C increase in temperature during this century alone. The USA recorded 2006 as the hottest year in over 100 years. Similarly, Europe experienced six of its hottest years since records began over 1509 years ago, falling between 1998 and 2006.

Designed by the German architectural firm Gerber Architekten International GmbH in cooperation with the environmental engineers DS-Plan, construction of a revolutionary ecological hi-rise that defines a new generation of sustainable high-rise buildings is expected to commence later this year in Bahrain’s capital, Manama. Through the innovative use of technology combined with an acute awareness of indigenous design principles, the energy demand of the new 221-metre-high tower is only 40 percent of similarly sized buildings. In addition, it is 100 percent energy self-sufficient by producing 100 percent of its own energy demand through renewable resources. Operating on zero primary energy and emitting zero CO2, the tower illustrates the role buildings can play in slowing down climate change by simply utilising technology readily available to all architects and engineers.
