BIG STORY
30 Audacious Ambitions
Opening months ahead of the Olympic Games, the completion of Terminal 3 (T3) at Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) brings to fruition yet another architectural icon in China. Thirty years after economic reforms began, the country has built a series of superstructures and architectural marvels including the world’s largest shopping mall, the world’s largest performance hall: the US$400-million National Centre for the Performing Arts, the main Olympic stadium nicknamed the Bird’s Nest, the nearby National Aquatics Centre known as the Water Cube and the new US$700-million headquarters of the country’s main state television network, China Central Television.
Twice the size of the Pentagon building in the United States and 17 percent larger than London Heathrow’s terminals 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 combined, Terminal 3 at BCIA is officially the world’s largest building. An incredible feat, designed and built in only 4 years, the superstructure bears testament to China’s rapid progress and the audacious ambition of this rising power.
